INVITATION: Special General Meeting – 17 June 2025

Special General Meeting for all Professional Architect members

As you are aware from the recent newsflash that the Cape Institute for Architecture [CIfA] has been invited by the South African Institute of Architects [SAIA] to rejoin after extensive negotiations and reform at SAIA.

We therefore give notice of a Special General Meeting for all Cape Institute for Architecture Professional Architect members on Tuesday 17 June 2025 at 17h00 at the CIfA offices at 71 Hout Street Cape Town, where we will discuss the invitation and then vote on whether CIfA rejoins SAIA.

A few of the main points highlighting the recent reform in SAIA are:

  • The Practice Levy has been done away with;
  • New lowered budget, based on new fees, based upon members, which equates to an income roughly in line with the regions;
  • Streamlining of SAIA expenses, including their sharing of office space with the Gauteng Institute for Architecture [GIfA] and the disbanding of non-essential committees and retrenchment of associated staff;
  • The rethinking of matters which potentially conflict with regions like CPD and sponsorship;
  • Action taken following investigations into staff misconduct;
  • Priority to be given to National advocacy for Architecture, which includes dealing with National Bodies such as SACAP, CBE, NHBRC, etc.
  • Increasing regional membership with a new fee system for membership and for becoming a SAIA Practice.

As we had always stated, we did not see our separation as being long-term, as we realise the necessity for a strong National voice for Architecture through SAIA.

If you are not able to attend and would like to vote, then as per CIfA Bylaw Clause 8.4 a voting member can appoint a representative to cast their vote in a specified manner at the meeting, or you can vote via the CIfA Proxy Form which can be downloaded here.

After celebrating our 125th year as the Cape Institute for Architecture last year, we hope to see as many of you as possible for this Special General Meeting!

Hugh Fraser, the SAIA Executive Manager, will also be present at the meeting to field any detailed queries.
