Obituary: Gavin Hamilton Pike 05.09.1942 – 03.08.2018
It is with sadness that we learned of the passing of our colleague, friend and mentor Gavin Pike.
Gavin grew up in East London and matriculated at Selborne College. After graduating from UCT in 1964 he travelled to the far East and worked in Australia for a short while. He subsequently settled in Cape Town and joined Munnik Visser Black and Fish and assisted Hirsch Fish during construction of the Cape Town Centre.
He was a founder member of Architects Associated, managing the residence programme at UWC. He later shared his extensive expertise in professional matters with architectural students at UCT, running the simulated Office Course. He also conducted workshops at the Institute preparing candidate architects for their professional practice examinations. He was actively involved in the Cape Institute and was elected president during 1990 -1991.
Gavin died suddenly on 3 August 2018 after a short illness. He will be remembered by his colleagues and friends as a gentleman known for his generosity of spirit. Our thoughts go out to his sisters, family and friends at this difficult time.
