CIFA Newsletter – September 2020

Simple dignity and fitness is what I have learnt from our vernacular architecture and what has subconsciously been an inspiration in my own work.”

GAWIE FAGAN

Dear CIfA Member

We hope you and your loved ones are healthy and safe during these uncertain and trying times.
We have entered the final stretch of a really strange year. However, it is Spring and spirits are lifting … now we are on level 1 of lockdown, which means most normal activities are possible once again. Things are still cold and wet, but it looks like we have received sufficient amounts of rain to sustain us through the summer that is beckoning.

Gabriel Theron (Gawie) Fagan 15.11.1925 – 13.09.2020

The Fagan family is arranging an intimate and private get-together to celebrate the life of Gawie Fagan this coming Sunday 27 September 2020 at 17h00. Attendance will be limited to family and close friends and is by invitation only. They are working on streaming the event live and we will inform you as soon as the details are finalised. Please keep an eye on your emails.

In addition, the CIfA decided to host a celebration of his life and work at our gallery on his birthday of 15 November 2020. This occasion will be open to all who want to attend. We will make more detail available once confirmed.

CIfA Invoices for the Financial Year 2020/2021

A new financial year – invoices have been sent out to all members and payments are coming in fast and furious. Thank you all very much. Please do not forget to put as a reference either your SAIA/CIfA membership number or name and surname as reference when depositing money directly into our account or when electronic transfers are made. As stated in the letter, which was sent together with your invoice, a 20% discount is applicable if subscription fees are paid before the end of September 2020.

It would be greatly appreciated if those members that find themselves in a position to be able to make the subscription payment could do so. This will assist in alleviating the financial difficulties the Institute is about to face and make it possible to defer payments for more financially vulnerable members.

If any member need to make special payment arrangements, please e-mail membership@cifa.org.za

Continuing Professional Development

Members are reminded that the Cape Institute for Architecture (CIfA) previously recorded a range of CPD events/talks which can be accessed via the CIfA website www.cifa.org.za. These videos are awarded the same CPD credits and cost the same as the live event and are specifically designed for those members in the outlying areas and for those members who prefer to binge watch and earn all their required Category 1 CPD credits. This will mean that from the comfort of your home you can collect/engage with CPD Category 1 credits. See attached on how to access these videos.

Great Architecture Books from the CIfA Office

It’s that time of year when thoughts start to turn to gift-giving, and what better gift for an architect than a beautiful book on architecture? If this thought had indeed crossed your mind, the attached list of available titles is attached for your perusal.

Send your order to cpd@cifa.org.za or call 021-424 7128.

“Architecture is the art and science of making sure that our cities and buildings actually fit with the way we want to live our lives: the process of manifesting our society into our physical world.”
