INVITATION: CALL FOR ENTRIES – CIfA Award for Architecture 2025

Dear CIfA Member & Members of the SAIA Regional Institutes

The Cape Institute for Architecture (CIfA) invites you to submit projects for the 2025 CIfA Award for Architecture.

Projects that fall in an area under jurisdiction of the Cape Institute for Architecture, and were completed during the period 1 January 2023 to 31 December 2024, are eligible for entry to the 2025 awards programme.

Any member of the institute can enter projects completed in ANY REGION for that region’s awards adjudication. You do not need to be a member of the region where you enter your projects. Should your practice have completed projects in other regions, please contact the relevant institute for information regarding their awards programme. Please note that their closing dates differ from the closing date of the Cape Institute for Architecture. List of all regional offices can be downloaded here.

All relevant documentation, logos and information needed to guide you through the submission process can be downloaded here.

PLEASE NOTE

  • Closing date for submission is Friday 30 May 2025.
  • No late entries will be accepted.
  • This is not a competition but an awards programme.

Category A

  • A new building or group of buildings (including small building projects);
  • A work of technological importance;
  • The conservation, restoration and/or rehabilitation (refurbishment) of existing buildings, historic precincts or areas

There is no restriction on the building type, use or size.  It is also intended for small-scale alterations or interiors if they are of exceptional quality and contribute to the current discourse on architecture.  Although the entry may contain flaws, it should be clearly identifiable as having specific attributes that are worthy of recognition.

Pertaining to the small building projects, the maximum value for projects eligible for consideration in this sub-category is R7.5 million. It is important to note the adjudication panel will play a key role in the selection of eligible projects. This will ensure that only projects of a certain size or budget are included, creating a level playing field.

Category B

  • A work of social importance, other than a building, for which the member was appointed as the architect;
  • Research in the field of architecture.

Category C
Paper Architecture – A work of unbuilt projects that were initially intended to be built; however, were never built due to financial constraints or other valid unforseen circumstances. These are projects that were completed in the past 10 years (2015 – 2024), although never built.

Entry to this category is not limited; however based on the submissions, the adjudication panel will determine the projects (projects type, scale, year / period, etc.) to be considered for adjudication.  The adjudication panel will assess submissions solely on design merit, as no physical site visits will be possible. Architects and clients must be available to answer any questions from the adjudication panel.

Projects in this category will be considered for a Commendation recognition only.

Panel of Adjudicators
The regional Panel of Adjudicators has been appointed by the Management Committee of the Cape Institute for Architecture. The names of the members on the panel are:

  • Abrahamse, Claire
  • Borgström, Michael – Panel Convener
  • Golding, Tanya
  • Maape, Sechaba
  • Thomas, Mark
  • Weldon, Sean
  • Woodward, Bettina

We look forward to receiving your entries and wish you the best of luck.
