The School of Architecture Planning and Geomatics at the University of Cape Town is committed to socially-just design and planning in the development of a post-apartheid South Africa. The School of Architecture, Planning & Geomatics offers an undergraduate and two postgraduate qualifications in architecture that is aligned to the professional registration categories of the South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP). We seek to appoint full-time academics within the architectural programme at senior lecturer level. We are looking for candidates who can add new dimensions to the teaching of architecture and who bring a dedication to innovation, cross-disciplinary work, and diversity.
We seek applications from architects in practice and/or academia who can make contributions in streams such as design, theory, technology, environmental design, and professional practice.
At least one of the positions is for the appointment of a candidate who focuses on and can teach building technology and construction.
Successful applicants will be expected to participate actively in the intellectual life of the school. Full-time members of staff are required to carry a full teaching load that includes studio as well as coursework teaching, to produce research outcomes, to engage in socially responsive activities, and to contribute to management and leadership at a level appropriate to their academic rank.
Applicants should describe their strengths in terms of the architectural knowledge stream that they best see themselves contributing to. They should explain their pedagogical position and approach to teaching in architecture in relation to studio and coursework respectively. They should provide evidence of engagement with, and commitment to, architectural research and education.
- a Masters’ degree (professional) or 5-year Bachelors’ degree in architecture or equivalent
- registration for a PhD degree and progress towards such a qualification
- a record of recent independent and original contributions to research either through peer-reviewed publication and / or awarded creative works
- evidence of social responsiveness (see http://www.uct.ac.za/main/explore-uct/social-responsiveness)
- at least five years teaching experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate level
The annual cost of employment, inclusive of all benefits, is R1, 027 040.
