We are now looking to recruit a Consultant: Urban Design into our Cape Town office to join our Urban Design Team.

These include policy and guideline development and the design and implementation of urban strategies, plans and masterplans, to significantly influence the economic, environmental, social, and cultural outcomes of a location.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Will include but not be limited to:
• Delivering high quality research and analysis on subject area, in relation to project needs.
• Support production of high-quality urban design and institutional analysis to support the delivery of client projects.
• Support management of internal and external teams delivering complex multi-country assignments.
• Conducting literature reviews site and development context analysis, summarizing material, synthesizing information, analysing content, and bringing added value and insight to the information collated.
• Drafting design proposals, reports and other forms of documentation for clients and partners.
• Preparing, and delivering with confidence, presentations to capture key findings, project outcomes, and/or project approach.
• Supporting the broader practice as a resource by conducting research, analysis, report writing, or other assistance on projects not related to specialist area if the need arises.
• Assisting with project co-ordination, project logistics and administration.
• Participating in and contributing to client-meetings and stakeholder engagements.
• Make an active contribution to developing new business opportunities and proposal development, which may also include the development of thought papers.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Required
• An undergraduate degree in architecture or town planning and a Master’s degree in Urban Design (recognised by The Urban Design Institute of South Africa (UDISA))
• 3-6 years’ working experience in Urban Design, strategy consulting, research in academia or for think-tanks, or development finance, in the urban design sector.
• Digital graphic ability as well as a minimum of 3 years’ experience in AutoCAD, GIS, Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign and Sketchup.
• The ability to support delivery of complex urban design projects across a range of scales.
• Proven experience working in diverse and multidisciplinary teams.
• Demonstrated capacity in financial/economic analysis of infrastructure projects and businesses relating to Urban Design.
• Experience in supporting project delivery and the finalisation of project products to clients.
• Exposure and experience in client and stakeholder engagement.
Preferred
• Experience of working in Africa and other frontier markets
• Foreign language proficiency in French or Portuguese.

• Strong communicator, written and oral skills of a high standard are required.
• 2 dimensional and 3D graphic and design with a demonstrated ability to sketch and draw by hand.
• Strong design capability and ability to manage and synthesise diverse and complex data analysis and synthesis and ability to work with spreadsheets and/or statistical packages.
• Experience with software packages such as QGIS, will be an advantage.
• Rigorous research skills, familiarity with research methods and referencing / citation methods.
• Strong MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel skills, or ability to work with equivalent platforms.
• Comfortable with strategic thinking, including the ability to draw linkages between evidence and strategic implications, to understand what the information suggests or points to.
