Block House

Solvation Architects

A juxtaposition of boxes and scale offers delightful moments found within the Blockhouse. This contemporary design offered a great sense of home and an opportunity for entertainment with spaces that open to the outdoors.

A play of different heights with the different boxes, allowed for a unique experience as one moved along the house. With a courtyard that portioned itself as the heart of the house, there also seemed to be a sequence of movements in and around the house, which made emphasis on these modular boxes that moved up or down as one moved along, from the cellar in the basement to the far edge of the house’s main bedroom.

The vast opening of windows allowed one to wander into the greater mountains surrounding the site’s location. One could sit on the windowsill and wander into the greater landscape of Stellenbosch.

A great play of materiality between the stone and plastered walls, together with the consistent play of boxes experienced on different planes.
