The annual DPW & CIFA CPD event was held in Cape Town at the Strand Towers Hotel on 09 July 2015. The title of the event was ‘Architecturally Different’ giving the speakers a wide range of opportunities to showcase their own work, tackle a topic of current interest or to revive long forgotten traditions. Martin Kruger spoke on the city as an accommodation for the individual buildings contained therein and ended with some of his own work. Yolanda Morkel informed the attendees about online teaching methods, showing how and why is has become a plausible way of educating architectural professionals and in so doing drew more than the expected enthusiasm and applause. Hermi Delport-Voulgarelis indicated how learning could be established via hands-on building work. Prof Henri Comri spoke on buildings in their urban context and Heidi Zollner showcased some of her adaptive re-use projects, much to the delight of the attendees since their content and application was much in line with inner city renewal principles and as such embodied a growing portion of architects’ work. Macio Mischevsky and Lloyd Rubidge had the opportunity to present their international award winning buildings, and delighted all present with an exposition of the Tree House and its intricacies at design level. To round out the afternoon, Trudi Groenewald  went into the details of the coordination of the consultants’ work on the SALT telescope at Southerland, highlighting the very close cooperation needed to realize a project of this complex and demanding nature.

All in all it was a very satisfying and stimulating day in the company of colleagues and much appreciation was expressed at the lengths gone to, in making  day the success it was.
